17 LOBO AND RASCAL

ANGUS and his men had not been in the meadow of Grizzly Killer’s village long, when Thunder came out of the trees to the south. The spotted stallion reared up and whinnied. Angus and his men all raised their rifles. Wondering if an attack was coming, Thunder pranced back and forth across the far southern end of the meadow. He was letting these strangers know, the dozen mares with their fouls in the meadow to the south was his, and he would not let these strangers come any closer to them.

Not long after Thunder had disappeared back into the forest, Dobs and Martin shouted to the others from the northwest side of the meadow, they had found a trail. Angus and the others soon joined them. The forest was dense, the trail they followed twisted and turned around dead fallen trees and rough rocky terrain. They had to use their hands to keep the stiff pine branches from scratching their faces.

Once again, the forest seemed too quiet. All they could hear were their horse’s hooves breaking branches and sticks that littered the forest floor. None of the men had spoken until something caught Clay's eye, and he looked to the left just as he passed a large pine. A dry stiff branch scratched across his ear hard enough to draw blood. Clay’s cussing shattered the silence, as the others all turned to see what had happened.

They came out of the trees and into the clearing around the small lake that Zach and the others had started to call the moose pond. For it seemed to be a favorite for moose to graze on the plants growing on the bottom. It was shallow enough the moose could walk way out toward the middle.

As they continued following the trail Zach and the others had used, Angus could not shake the feeling he was being watched. Hard as he tried, he could find no evidence anyone or anything was out there watching them.

They followed the trail up over the small steep ridge north of the shallow lake, and Angus stopped. A shallow valley spread out before them. It was a mile wide and was covered in willows. One beaver pond after another fed the willows.

Henry said, “Think of all the plews we could get here.”

The others all nodded, but Angus said, “We’re after gold, not plews.”

Henry said with a bitter tone in his voice, “Ain’t got no traps even if we were.”

As Angus followed the trail west, they entered another stand of thick pines. Just as he ducked under the branches of a spruce, a wolf stood in the trail ahead. His horse panicked and jumped, throwing Angus into the tree. When he looked up, the wolf was gone. It took Henry and Clay to stop his horse. Angus was bruised and scratched, but not really hurt. None of the others had seen the wolf.

They moved on. Angus was keeping his horse at a very slow walk. He had always been a very cautious man, but the others all thought he was being overly cautious now.
